Income generation
One of the main visible problems in Maisha Bora is the absence of work. Without employment the sustainability of any development within this community will not be possible.
To avoid this situation, staff in Maisha Bora will be equipping adults with skills to create an income for themselves.
This starts in adult literacy classes where adults learn to read and write. These classes become self sustaining as by the end of the course the taught can become the teachers for the next groups.
Our work will also encourage the formation of groups to represent the views of community members. For example women's groups, school groups or church groups. Through our other programmes we have found that these groups serve to have people working together more as well as forming a collective voice to communicate their interests.
On the bed rock on community groups and a core of the adult population becoming literate, our staff will also introduce practical income generation projects. In Maisha Bora these will include:
Poultry production
Goat rearing projects
Bead making and bread baking
Knitting of table mats and pullover projects
Small scale micro enterprises
Through literacy classes and this brood of projects, local people will be equipped with sustainable and transferable skills.
