How much is it/where does my money go?
Sponsorship costs £18 a month and in each of our projects goes towards benefiting not just your sponsored child but their community at large. Sponsorship money goes towards the direct cost of providing uniform, equipment and fees for school for the child, health measures and training for their family, income generation training and activities for the adult population and other activities on a community-wide and a community-specific level such as HIV/AIDS campaigns, water access and so on.
How are children selected?
Before we begin a child sponsorship scheme within a community, our local staff consult community groups and leaders to identify the neediest children .
Most children who are registered for sponsorship are either orphaned, living in particularly large families or with parents who are ill and struggling to meet the basic needs of all their young.
A sufficient number of children are selected to provide an adequate level of funding to make the projects sustainable on a community by community basis. This figure varies between 300-1000 children depending on the size of the community.
How are the community involved?
We work with the community leaders, church and interest groups to identify and then tackle the root causes of poverty specific to each community we work in. Over 90% of our staff are country nationals and many of them come from or near the communities in which we are at work. Because our staff know the problems specific to these communities they are able to form, work with and empower community groups to overcome them in practical and culturally sensitive ways.
what are the success stories?
We have an excellent record of working with local people to over come poverty through child sponsorship. In 1999 the community of Makhai in Uganda was in a desolate and desperate condition. With a demotivated population, no school and widespread health and social problems, including endemic drug and alcohol abuse, this community was said to be 'cursed.'
Today, the community has been transformed through a large scale, long term, child sponsorship scheme which has enabled, amongst other things, the construction of a large primary school to accommodate and support the over 500 children who attend on a daily basis, improved farming techniques to secure a stable food supply, latrine constructions, widespread use of health classes and other measures to tackle disease, adult literacy classes and more.
These changes have been facilitated by staff who have worked to transform the mentality of those in Makhai - from a hopeless and fatalistic people to an empowered and valued community who are assured of their self-worth, potential and of the love God has for each of them. With this joy the staff have been able to reach out and transform the lives of individual children, families and the community of Makhai at large.
For more about Makhai, and to get an impression of the huge impact child sponsorship can have on a whole community, we are working on a section of this site with a please read a first hand account of the changes in Makhai written by a local staff member. This information will be accessible by October 20th 2008. Until then, if you would like to find out about the success of other programmes across Africa, please just contact us.
