Child Sponsorship

Introduction

Today's children are tomorrow's parents and leaders. Sponsoring a child gives you the opportunity to be truly involved in the development of a community. Child Sponsorship through FHI’s Child Development Programme (CDP) is child-focussed community development.

The goal of CDP is that

Through the Vision of a Community, the community and its people will be progressing towards their God-Given potential, by:

In practice, this is achieved by

Child sponsorship provides a stability of income over several years to the community, which makes real community development a possibility. Child sponsorship helps to break the cycle of poverty, despair and hopelessness by nurturing the child within a developing community. The child's basic physical needs are assured, including nutrition, education, medical care and clothing, together with the opportunity to know God. But the emphasis is always on the wholistic development of the community - so that they grow in their capacity to nurture their children. Community development ensures that the children grow up in a community with safe drinking water, reliable food production and income generation schemes for future employment and security. Priority is given to community ownership of such schemes.

Sponsoring children can make a real, long-term difference - one person at a time.

Between 1996 and 2002, Food for the Hungry UK supported the FHI/Uganda Child Development Programme in Katale village, near Kampala, Uganda. FHI involvement in this community over the 7 years has led to a completely new outlook for its people. Indeed, we feel that FHI's Vision of a Community has been achieved here. Sponsorship is also helping Makhai in Uganda to advance towards their God-given potential. We feel that we now have a good core of sponsors and the community is making great progress. We are therefore no longer seeking new sponsors for this community, because new sponsors will probably not have a very long period of sponsorship before we bring the work to a close there and let the community continue its development on its own.

However, new UK sponsors are invited for children in Gikomero, Rwanda, where the needs are truly very great. Sponsorship of a child costs just £16 per month. Download a flyer from here

Sponsoring a child through FHI is bringing blessing to the sponsor, as well as the child. Just as we pray for our own children, sponsors are encouraged to pray for their sponsored child, and God will always work through this.
