Although we were still waiting for the tables and chairs to be delivered for the classrooms, benches were borrowed from the church to enable classes to start in October 2009.
The children were very excited to be there. Through the classes we hope to offer these 100 children the conditions needed to enable them to develop their full potential, to be able to provide for themselves and their families in the future, and to change their community and nation.
Like flowers, children can’t grow, flourish and reach their full potential without the right conditions. A flower needs light, water and heat or it will not grow and wither. Without certain conditions such as love, a good diet, opportunities to explore, encouragement and knowledge, children can’t grow and bloom. This results in poor communities as they are unable to provide for themselves and their families when they become adults. However, as with a flower, the potential to bloom already lies within them. Each has specific talents, skills, gifts and dreams given by God. They just need the right conditions to enable them to release their potential; conditions which they currently do not have.
If the children were not in the project they would more than likely be at home with no stimulation, not discovering or developing their potential, nor interacting with others. Many would be home alone if their parents can find work. Many have very difficult home lives and so enjoy an escape from problems at home. For that reason, we also work with the families to identify and overcome issues in the home which prevent the children developing or cause them harm. Parents have commented that the children have been notably happier since the project started.
