Monica Veronica Calamani Callisay, 11, lives with her father, her 4 brothers
aged between 2-9 years old, her aunt and 6 uncles. Her mother sadly passed away
in 2008. Her father works from 8am to 8pm, Monday to Saturday to help support
the family. The home for the thirteen family members is a one floor house made
from adobe bricks. Monica shares a room with her four younger brothers and a bed
with her 9 year old brother Ruben.
As is common for the area, their home has running water and light but no gas or
sewage connection. They have no choice but to use the river as a toilet. In the
mornings Monica goes to school. After school she helps her aunt cook lunch which
includes meat, potatoes, pasta and lettuce. In the afternoons Monica does her
homework, house chores and watches TV. In the evenings they eat rice, cabbage,
pumpkin, meat and potatoes.
