Prayer Requests for Nkunga
- Pray that the relative success of new drought-resistant crop varieties introduced by FH might further spur people to invest in these new crops and improved farming methods. Please pray for a growing willingness of the community to embrace necessary change to their cultivation and to their diet.
- The long-term solution to the community’s shortage of water seems to lie with Government and local authorities. Please pray for the community’s representations to these authorities and for necessary funding to be made available.
- Give thanks for continued growth in education at Nkunga, and especially for the growth in numbers attending secondary schools. Continue to pray for the primary school and parents as they consider how to deal with the inadequate allocation of teachers – only 6 teachers, including the headmaster, for 8 classes.
- Give thanks for the increasing numbers of cross-bred goats, sired by the Togenburg, and for the improved supply of milk available from them. Give thanks for the increasing number of orange, mango and papaya trees and drought-resistant food crops growing in the school and community.
- Give thanks for growing unity and vision among the church leaders in Nkunga. Also for the interdenominational prayer and Bible study groups. Please pray for real growth and unity in these groups and for the impact of their study, prayers and work in the entire community.
- Give thanks for the growing success of the tree nursery. Trees are planted to provide fodder, firewood, timber, nitrogen-rich mulch and soil improvement, as well as seedlings for sale. Please pray that this project will continue to be well managed and to increasingly provide materials and opportunities over many years.
- Give thanks for the rainwater harvesting system and 24,000 litre tank installed last September, which has been providing clean drinking water for the school children. Even so, children are still required to walk to the “Sacred Lake” to collect water after school for domestic use. Please pray that the community would increasingly act to protect the children, especially the girls, who are vulnerable to attack at these times.
- Give thanks for growing openness to deal with the realities of the HIV/AIDS pandemic and for the free voluntary counselling and testing that is now available. Give thanks for the help being given by the community to families that are living with the condition. Please also pray for those whose behaviour risks themselves and others with the condition.
- Give thanks for Rosemary, the FH staff member dedicated to the Nkunga project, and for the relationship she has developed with the people. Pray for her in her main task of bringing people together - especially the different churches - to seek God and His solutions to problems together. Give thanks for the volunteers from the community who visit homes to share and encourage the people and pray with them. Please pray for their health and security, for unity as a team and for God to perform His work through them.
- Pray for students in vocational training courses and for those who have completed. Pray for success in their training and for good jobs when qualified. Pray also for Jane, who spent a year with FH as a volunteer in the community after completing secondary school and is now training to be an accountant.
